In James Clear's iconic book, Atomic Habits, he outlines a framework for creating and maintaining habits that can significantly improve our lives. This framework can be applied to spiritual habits as well, helping us to deepen our faith and grow closer to God. Today, we’ll explore how to integrate the habit of reading the Bible into our daily routine using Clear's methods.
The Four Laws of Behavior Change
Clear’s framework for habit formation consists of four laws: Cue, Craving, Response, and Reward. Let’s break down how each of these can be applied to the habit of reading the Bible.
1. Cue: Make It Obvious
Start with a Visual Cue:
Place your Bible in a spot where you can't miss it. This could be on your nightstand, next to your coffee maker, or on your work desk. The idea is to create a visual cue that will remind you to read it.
Example:
If you brew coffee every morning, place your Bible right next to your coffee maker. The smell of coffee will then act as a cue to remind you to read a passage
.
Use Habit Stacking:
Attach your Bible reading to an existing habit. This technique, known as habit stacking, makes it easier to incorporate a new habit into your routine.
Example:
"After I brush my teeth in the morning, I will read one chapter of the Bible."
2. Craving: Make It Attractive
Join a Bible Study Group:
Being part of a community can make the habit more enjoyable and hold you accountable. Discussing insights and learning from others makes the process attractive.
Example:
Find a local or online Bible study group that meets weekly. The social interaction and shared learning will make you look forward to your Bible reading time.
Reward Yourself:
Pair your Bible reading with something you enjoy. This makes the habit more appealing and increases the likelihood of you sticking with it.
Example:
Allow yourself to enjoy a piece of chocolate or your favorite snack only after you’ve read your Bible for the day.
3. Response: Make It Easy
Start Small:
Begin with just a few verses or a single chapter. This reduces the friction involved in starting the habit and makes it easier to maintain.
Example:
Commit to reading just one verse a day. Once this becomes a consistent habit, you can gradually increase the amount you read.
Use a Bible App:
If carrying a physical Bible around isn’t convenient, use a Bible app on your phone. This makes it easier to read on the go and reduces the barriers to starting.
Example:
Download a Bible app and set daily reminders for a specific time to read a passage.
4. Reward: Make It Satisfying
Track Your Progress:
Keep a log of your Bible reading. Seeing your progress can be incredibly motivating and satisfying.
Example:
Use a habit tracker app or a simple journal to mark each day you read your Bible. Celebrate weekly or monthly milestones.

Reflect and Pray:
End your Bible reading session with a short prayer or reflection. This reinforces the positive feelings associated with the habit.
Example:
After reading, take a few minutes to reflect on the passage and say a prayer. This creates a satisfying and fulfilling end to your Bible reading time.
By applying the principles from Atomic Habits, you can make reading the Bible a regular part of your daily routine. Start small, make it attractive, easy, and satisfying, and you'll be well on your way to cultivating this enriching spiritual habit.
Remember, the key to lasting change is consistency and making the habit fit seamlessly into your life.
