Spiritual habit # 2 Guard the Gates

Imagine a bustling medieval city, encircled by towering walls, where a grand gate serves as the main entrance. This gate is meticulously guarded by sentinels whose primary duty is to decide who can enter and who must remain outside. The city symbolizes your spiritual life—a sanctuary that must be protected to thrive. Just as the guards at the city’s gate carefully assess each visitor, ensuring they pose no harm, we, too, must be the vigilant gatekeepers of our hearts and minds, determining what influences can enter and shape our spiritual journey.

Drawing from the principles of "Atomic Habits" by James Clear, think of these guards as embodying the small, consistent actions that define our habits. In this context, creating spiritual boundaries is akin to habitually choosing what we allow to influence us. These sentinels are discerning and cautious, allowing entry to traders who bring value and joy, travelers who share wisdom, and friends who enrich the city’s culture. Similarly, by establishing spiritual boundaries, we consciously choose which influences to welcome and which to keep at bay, cultivating a habit that fosters spiritual growth.

Understanding the Need for Boundaries

Just as in "Atomic Habits," where small habits compound over time to create significant change, setting spiritual boundaries involves consistent, intentional actions that define the framework of our spiritual lives.

Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, "Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it."

This underscores the importance of vigilance in what we let into our lives, shaping who we are and how we live our faith.

Identifying Influences

To establish these spiritual boundaries, begin by identifying influences in your life:

1. Media and Entertainment:

Like choosing healthy habits over detrimental ones, be discerning about the content you consume. Ensure it aligns with Christian principles to support spiritual growth.

2. Social Circles:

Surround yourself with people who share or respect your faith. Just as positive habits are reinforced by community, positive influences reinforce spiritual growth.

3. Work and Environment:

Set boundaries in professional settings to maintain spiritual commitments. This mirrors the idea of creating an environment that supports beneficial habits.

4. Internal Thoughts:

Cultivate a habit of mindfulness regarding your internal dialogue, ensuring it reflects your faith and values.

Practical Steps to Establish Boundaries

1. Reflect and Assess:

Regularly evaluate what influences you. This is similar to assessing habits—understanding which draw you closer to or away from your faith.

2. Set Clear Limits:

Define realistic limits, much like setting achievable habit goals. For instance, establish non-negotiable times for prayer and meditation.

3. Communicate Your Boundaries:

Clearly express your boundaries to those around you. This is akin to sharing habit goals with a support system for accountability.

4. Seek Support:

Engage with fellow Christians or a spiritual mentor. Just as habits are strengthened by social reinforcement, spiritual boundaries are fortified through communal support.

5. Pray for Wisdom and Strength:

Incorporate prayer as a daily practice, much like a keystone habit, asking for guidance and strength to uphold boundaries.

The Benefits of Boundaries

Establishing boundaries not only protects your spiritual well-being but also deepens your relationship with God. By consciously choosing what influences you, you lay the groundwork for personal growth, peace, and a more authentic expression of your faith. Boundaries, much like positive habits, help you remain steadfast in your beliefs, even amidst a world full of distractions.

Creating boundaries for influence as a Christian is a proactive step towards nurturing your spiritual life. It empowers you to live intentionally, ensuring that your actions and thoughts align with your faith. As you grow in this habit, you’ll find yourself more grounded and resilient in your spiritual journey, much like the cumulative power of small, consistent habits leading to profound change.
